What we caught and put right

Every card was checked against the players' own hole scores before it counted. Here is what that turned up on the day, and how each was put right.

  1. The last card in, a ghost, a tie for 1st and a countback in minutes 18:09 to 18:27

What happened: the 13:30 three-ball of Rehan Cloete, Jaco Du Plesis and Schalk Pieterse teed off after the competition's last tee time of 13:06, so they were not on the draw, and their card was the last one in. As a three-ball they also needed the ghost.

How it was put right: on Iain's word at 18:16 they were added as a new group, with Mike Brooks's round as their ghost fourth player, as in the other three-balls. With the ghost they scored 86, level with the Austin team for the top place. Iain asked for the countback at 18:25 and had it two minutes later. It went all the way to the last three holes: level on the back 9 (44 each), level on the back 6 (30 each), and the Austin team ahead on the back 3, 16 to 15. By hand, adding a late group, building its ghost card and counting back two tied teams hole by hole takes hours. Here it took two minutes.

  2. Card totals that did not add up: human error, every one 6 of the 20 team cards

What we found: on 6 of the 20 team cards, the total the players wrote down was not the true total of their own hole scores. Iain went through each one with Ambrose, and every one was a human slip on the card. One point can decide a place: today 1st and 2nd were level on points.

    • Fourball 7 (1st tee 11:54): card 69, true 68. Brett Johnson took a stroke on the 3rd that he does not get.
    • Fourball 8 (10th tee 11:54): card 76, true 74. Two players' scores and handicaps were swapped (see below).
    • Fourball 9 (1st tee 12:02): card 76, true 75. Craig Ross took a stroke on the 15th that he does not get.
    • Fourball 11 (1st tee 12:10): card 76, true 77. Simon Norris's stroke on the 1st was missed.
    • Fourball 14 (10th tee 12:18): card 84, true 85. Ian Kirk's 7 on the 18th scores a point with his stroke. This team finished 3rd on 85.
    • Fourball 25 (1st tee 13:30): card 79, true 78. Schalk Pieterse's two on the 7th is worth 3 points, not the 4 written.

How it was put right: every team was scored from its hole scores, not from the total written on the card, and each difference was shown to Iain for his check. Players' own gross totals slipped too: Philip Austin wrote 83 for a round of 82, Chris Boschoff 90 for 100 and Mike Rich 88 for 86. On fourball 17 Kevin Dyamond's score on the 18th was missing from the card; with it filled in, the team's 79 matches.

  3. Two players' handicaps switched Fourball 8, 10th tee 11:54

What we found: Craig Heeger's and Tinus Slabber's scores were sitting under each other's names, so each man was being scored off the other man's handicap. Taken as written, the card gave the team 80 points. The points the players had written on their card only made sense with the two the other way round, so we held the card back.

How it was put right: Iain confirmed which column was whose (16:29). Each man's 18 holes went back under his own name: Craig Heeger 89 off 6, Tinus Slabber 103 off 21. The team's true score is 74, six points lower.

  4. A fourball that scored the wrong format

What we found: one fourball added up their card as a normal fourball alliance, with two scores counting on every hole, instead of the progressive 1-2-3: one score on the 1st, two on the 2nd, three on the 3rd, and round again.

How it was put right: their team score was worked out from their own hole scores in the right format, one, two and three scores in turn, the same as every other team.

  5. A ghost player for the three-balls From 15:43

What we found: Iain asked for Mike Brooks to play as the ghost fourth player in every three-ball.

How it was put right: once Mike's own card was in, his round (off his handicap of 1) was added as the fourth player on each three-ball card: 1st tee 11:38 (71 became 86), 10th tee 11:46 (63 became 76) and the 13:30 group (78 became 86). The ghost counts for the team only: his two on the 7th is paid once, to Mike.

  6. The same card sent twice Fourball 5

What we found: fourball 5's card came in as two photos of the same card.

How it was put right: the second copy was flagged straight away (16:37), and the team counts once, on 78. That is why 21 cards were checked for 20 teams. From 16:53, on Iain's instruction, any repeat photo was set aside.

  7. Late tee sheet changes, done before the first card 15:21 to 15:29

What we found: the live tee sheet Iain sent at 15:21 differed from the draw.

How it was put right: within eight minutes, and before any card was scored, three players were added (Adrian Maree, Keith McAlister, Luigi Giuricich), three taken off, one moved and twelve names re-spelt to match the sheet. Craig Ross then played though he was not on the sheet; he was added from his card, so his score and his two on the 17th count.

  8. Prize money on the players who paid

What we found: not everyone on the entry list paid.

How it was put right: every money line is worked on the 89 who paid: R5 340 in fees, R890 for the 2 Clubs, R3 115 for prizes and R1 335 club share, matching the club's spreadsheet.

  9. Every guest marked

What we found: 14 visitors on the tee sheet played in the competition, two of them in the late 13:30 group.

How it was put right: all 14 are marked (G) on the results and listed by name, with Jaco Du Plesis and Schalk Pieterse added at 18:34.
